Would you import the JDM version of a car already sold in the US?

I spotted this RHD !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! (not a USDM Celica alltrac!) at work today. I suppose for something like this that was sold in the US, but relatively rare, importing one might be cheaper and/or easier to find a good example, right?

yes. as it seems to be the only way to get the ultra high level spec of the same model, or one in decent condition

Driving an other-side-drive car is virtue signaling. Change my mind.

I feel like driving a RHD car would be a hassle, but IF the car had a compelling JDM engine/drivetrain I might import a cheap but mechanically sound one and swap them into a cherry USDM body.

I might if I worked rural delivery for the post office.

I see lots of 60 and 80 series JDM Land Cruisers in my area. Yes, those were sold in the US, but the JDM ones have lots of unique features and options that were unavailable elsewhere.

Up here in certain cases the imported JDM models are cheaper or equal in price com paired to the domestic LHD models. The ones that come to mind are EVO’s & STi’s. Also the JDM model might have better/different  options too.

I was thinking the same thing. Hopefully years from now, rural mail carriers will all be driving around in imported RHD wagons.

GT-Fours are the garbage projects of the jdm imports. I’ve never seen a nice one, they are always beat, and usually being sold or trade for subwoofers on CL/Kj..

Plus the T180 is old, T200 GT-Four are the way to go.

JDM isn’t my thing but I would take this:

40 more HP and ft-lb and weighing 150 lbs less than what we got here? Yes, please.

Except here in the US we have a 25 year import rul e, not 15 like Canada, a nd it’s only been on the books for a few years. So the ST185 is the newest we’re allowed to have here.

For a 3rd gen Supra without a 7m i6? Hell yes I would. I'm not sure if that counts though.

Literally same model? No. Something we couldn’t get, like we got 90s imprezza 2.5rs but not an sti model? Sure, I'd think about bringing an sti over. But I'd have to be something I couldn't just recreate. Probably an early Evo would be a good example.

It’s not too bad, just takes a little more planning when passing.  Although my RHD car is about half the width of a normal full size car.

Sure. I can think of plenty of 80's and 90's Japanese cars in which the JDM version was substantially improved over the USDM car, and were I still playing with those cars there are things I would be tempted to import good enough examples of.

Ive honestly debated buying the bones of an rx7 to restore here in the us or just waiting the five more years for a 99 spec one.

Kinja'd!!!

If i wait i can get the color combo i want, the brakes will be upgraded, and theres a chance itll end up being cheaper. Im not making a crazy fire spitting build regardless, the 99 spec would need literally seats and wheels and nothing else

Gettin g used to your position in the lane would be easy enough but a lot of our road infrastructure is set up with the assumption the driver is on the left side, i.e. toll booths, drive thrus, those ticket machines in parking lots, etc...
